Socks and sandals the fashion spring surprise

April 16th, 2010

Socks with sandals have been making a rare resurgence on the catwalk of late, hinting that they might be this spring’s new trend. Both Marni and Christian Dior have sported the strapping ankle accessories in their latest runway collections, making industry insiders claim that this season is all about socks appeal.

Though many purists might scoff at the schoolyard type dress-code, nevertheless, the trend towards socks on the catwalk has been a slow burner for several seasons now. Whatever way you choose to wear them – up, neat and tight or low-slung and baggy – socks are the perfect way to add a touch of flair to your outfit, while keeping your mum and your feet happy at the same time. Socks are also a great way to cover over thick ankles, but make sure you choose a dark colour.

Both knee-high and ankle socks have always been a favourite accessory for those wearing platforms, wedges, flat lace-ups or stacked heels, but the appearance on the runway of London’s Margaret Howell and Milan’s Consuelo Castiglione of Marni has brought the sidewalk to the catwalk.

Elsewhere, John Galliano showcased socks resembling glitter-balls as the final touch to his revival of 1940s-style wedges which complemented the wispy dresses seen in the recent spring/summer collection from Christian Dior. Rei Kawakubo and Miuccia Prada have both thrown socks into the fashion mix.

A word of warning from the experts – this is a young person’s trend, so forget about it if you are over thirty. The look then is one of a grown-up schoolgirl, and no over thirty-year-old wants to be confused with a school-leaver. Marks & Spencer offers a three-pack for just £5.
