Audrey Hepburn LBD voted best ever outfit

The iconic little black dress famously worn by Audrey Hepburn has been voted as the greatest ever female on-screen outfit.

The stunning gown, designed by Givenchy, remains one of screen film’s most enduring wardrobe items, with Hepburn wearing it for the opening scenes of the seminal 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. In the film, Hepburn accessorised the strapless dress with long black gloves and a simple string of pearls, proving simplicity is often the key to looking great.

The award was voted in by those polled in a new survey by leading UK DVD rental company magazine Lovefilm, who declared the outfit the most popular dress of all time. According to Lovefilm magazine’s editor Helen Cowley, Hepburn made the little black dress a staple wardrobe item of women across the world, and one which, despite some competition from some seriously stylish women, has stood the test of time.

The Hepburn dress beat out other such notable outfits as the bikini worn by Ursula Andress in the James Bond movie Dr No, which was placed fourth, and contemporary gowns such as the silk wedding dress worn by Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker, which was voted into tenth. The survey coincides with the release of the sequel to the movie.

Hepburn also featured in an additional outfit on the Lovefilm top ten, with the parasol and hat accompanied white dress from her role as Eliza Doolittle from My Fair Lady also winning over fans. Keira Knightley and Marilyn Monroe rounded out the top three with their outfits from Atonement and The Seven Year Itch respectively.
