British Fashion Designer Alexander McQueen Found Dead

Friday, February 12th, 2010

On Thursday, British fashion icon Alexander McQueen was found dead in his Central London home. The death appears to be a suicide, as he was found hanged, and police don’t suspect anything suspicious.

The 40-year-old had been going through a rough time over the last week and half. His mother, Joyce, died last Tuesday, and he has been grieving her since. Her funeral was set for today, and he was suppose to attend. McQueen is also said to have been getting over a recent breakup, while his friends say he was under a lot of pressure to get his autumn/winter collection done for launch next month in Paris. Seems he had a lot on his plate!

Friends and colleagues had become worried about McQueen recently when he started showing erratic behavior, but his death has shocked them all. In a statement from his company, they say that are devastated and share the same grief and shock as his family. Staff leaving the headquarters of the company were so upset they didn’t even want to talk.

McQueen’s suicide comes as a big loss for the British fashion industry, because he was a very successful commercial designer and one of the most respected. His McQ line was suppose to show at New York Fashion Week on Thursday, but they had to cancel it. This will also hinder London Fashion Week when it starts next week.

The fashion icon designed pieces that have been largely worn by celebrities like Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Kate Moss – all of whom are sure to be mourning his death like the many others who have posted their condolences on Twitter. He was known for having an incredible imagination and creating unique pieces.

Dannii Minogue Becomes New Face for Marks & Spencer

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

On Sunday, Marks & Spencer announced the decision to cut the team of glamour girls they use to be the faces for their women’s wear collections, who have been working for the company for nearly 4 years, and keep only Twiggy. Although they decided to get rid of Myleene Klass, Noemie Lenoir and Erin O’Connor as faces for their campaigns, they have replaced them with a new team of women to be the faces of the company’s new Spring/Summer campaign.

Joining Twiggy will be singer VV Brown, television presenter Lisa Snowdon, Brazilian model Ana Beatriz Barros and singer Dannii Minogue, who is also a judge on The X Factor. Minogue is expecting her first child with boyfriend Kris Smith, a former rugby player and now model.

She is very excited about becoming a face for the company, which she expressed on Twitter by saying that she’s delighted to be a Marks & Spencer girl. Later she tweeted about being on the beach shooting the spring campaign, which will launch in print and on television in March.

Although this brings in some big changes, Marks & Spencer says that Myleene Klass is still a big part of their family and is working on many different projects, which include M&S Online TV and M&S Money. Keeping Twiggy of course isn’t surprising, as she’s been with the company since 2004, when Sir Stuart and his marketing director Steven Sharp joined. A spokesman for the company says that Twigging resonates with their core consumers. It’s always good to have fresh faces!

Bath Fashion Museum Dress of the Year 2009

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

The Fashion Museum in Bath has announced its Dress of the Year for 2009. The institution has been getting an expert to choose the best outfit or look for every year since 1963, celebrating cutting edge design. Previous winners include Versaci, Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren and John Galliano.

This year they chose Lucy Yeomans, the editor of Harper’s Bazaar fashion magazine, to do the honors. She picked an Antonio Berardi dress, which was worn by Gwyneth hPaltrow for the 2008 premiere of “Two Lovers in Paris”. Speaking about the dress, Paltrow said that she was amazed by the uniqueness and construction when she tried it on. It is one her favorite dresses, she continued, and feels lucky to have had the chance to wear it on that evening in Paris.

The dress is a black and white trompe l’oeil corset featuring lace paneling. It was originally shown in the designer’s Spring/Summer 2009 collection and has been donated to the museum’s collection like all the dresses or outfits before it.

Talking about Berardi, Victoria Beckham said that he knows how to make women feel sexy but contemporary. Beckham is another of Berardi’s many clients, which also includes Beyoncé.

Councillor Terry Gazzard, the cabinet member responsible for service at the museum, said that, as the Dress of the Year 2009 shows, Bath and North East Somerset Council holds the British fashion industry in high regard, as it contributes to the reputation of the area as a center for creative industries. They are very grateful for the generous support from both Lucy Yeomans and Antonio Berardi, Gazzard continued, and they hope everyone will enjoy seeing the dress.

Jay-Z says Susan Boyle is Fashionable

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Is Susan Boyle a future fashion diva? Well US rapper Jay-Z sure thinks so after claiming that the British singing sensation should launch her own clothing line. Meanwhile, Amanda Holden, a judge on Britain’s Got Talent, doesn’t think Susan’s success can be repeated.

Talking to press, the rapper said that Susan has achieved the unbelievable and everyone wants a piece of her, and the market has grown for her. He can see her with her own fashion range, as women of her age will be attracted to her. Jay-Z added that these women will see her as an ordinary person that made the best of herself, which will give them hope.

Meanwhile, Susan has been having a hard time with people lurking around her home and even breaking in. Sony bosses have offered to pay her rent in a luxury Malibu apartment worth $9.5 million in order to keep her safe.

Not so fast though! Susan isn’t letting her newly found fame go to her head – and all over concerns for her cat Pebbles.

A source at Sony says that she told them she wouldn’t be happy without her cat even though they were willing to let her take the cat too. Susan is worried about the cat not surviving the flight, which is 11 hours, the source continued, and even if Pebbles did, she may not like living by the ocean. The insider added that they can’t help but admire the singer for sticking to her guns, as tons of people would give anything to stay in a Malibu home for free.
