12-year-old Ava Sambora Debuts as Runway Model

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Ava Sambora, the 12-year-old daughter of Heather Locklear and Richie Sambora, who are now divorced, made her debut on the catwalk for the White Trash Beautiful show for Los Angeles Fashion Weekend. The show kicked of the weekend event on Friday.

The pre-teen model walked down the runway in 4 rock n’ roll looks, created by fashion designer Nikki Lund and her father, to the sound of Livin on a Prayer. She looked much older than just 12 in a leather strapless mini dress with accessories inspired by Bon Jovi.

Heather expressed how proud she is of her daughter, saying that she’s very excited and there to support her. She sat right on the front row – where else? However, she said that as soon as they were done with it all, she was going take off Ava’s makeup and get her into some pajamas.

It appears that Nikki is very supportive as well, calling Ava a diva and amazing. When asked about if Richie was nervous about the debut, she said that he’s really excited about it. The rocker didn’t even get to go, though, due to a last minute scheduling conflict, which kept him stuck in Canada. However, Nikki is said to have been sending him pics on her phone during the whole thing.

Well there’s no doubt that Ava has the ’star genes’ from her parents. She will probably do a little in all celebrity worlds – sing, act and model – as she’s got the family background to do it.

Alexander McQueen Family to Scatter His Ashes on Isle of Skye

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

The ashes of Alexander McQueen, the British fashion icon, are to be scattered on the Isle of Skye by his family. The 40-year-old, before he committed suicide, told his family that he wanted the island to be his final place of rest. He thought of the island as his ancestral home, and his family will travel there in the next few weeks to carry out his wishes.

McQueen was very proud of his Scottish ancestry, as his father Ronald was Skye-born, and he celebrated this in his fashion creations. When he found out that he had Jacobite ancestors, he claimed it was one his ancestors that brought Bonnie Prince Charlie to safety on the island after his Culloden defeat.

McQueen showed a provocative 1995 collection, controversially called Highland Rape, which featured models wearing torn tartan. He said that his anger at the atrocities done by the Duke of Cumberland’s troops were what inspired the collection. Then in 2004, the designer was asked the meaning of his Scottish roots, and he said that they meant everything to him.

Talking about his wishes, McQueen’s brother Michael said that he made it clear that he wanted his ashes to be scattered on the Isle of Skye. This is where the family is originally from, and they will honor his wishes, he continued. McQueen had been there many times over the years, Michael added, and he felt a real connection there.

McQueen is getting a Dressed to Kilt tribute next month, which will showcase Scottish fashion. It is being organized by Sir Sean Connery. Michael said that McQueen would have been honored.

Joseph Fashion Founder Joseph Ettedgui Dies

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Some of the fashion industry’s biggest names paid tribute to Joseph Ettedgui, the founder of the Joseph label, on Friday. The fashion designer died at a London hospital surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer. On the Joseph website they have “Joseph Ettedgui 1936 – 2010” boldly posted in tribute – he was 74.

Ettedgui was the son of a French-Moroccan furniture retailer and moved to London in 1960 from Casablanca. He established the Joseph label in 1972, and then opened over 20 stores across England, Germany, France and the United States, carrying all the sought-after fashions of top designers like Alexander McQueen, Prada, Gucci, Kenzo, Celine and Emmanuelle Khanh. Nearly 5 years ago, he sold the label for £23.8 million; however, a spokeswoman says that his influence was still felt, adding that he will remain a very big part of it.

Miucca Prada called Ettedgui’s shops some of the most beautiful in the world, while he was praised by Christian Lacroix as possibly the only one to have combined hard-nosed business and avant-garde art successfully. The popular fashion guru was also described by John Richmond as modern retail’s creator, while Azzedine Alaia noted he took risks when others gave up and said that fashion would be saved if everyone was like him.

Maurice, Ettedgui’s brother, says that his older brother was battling cancer, but it got worse over the last 3 months. He says that the two and their other brother Franklin were like the 3 Musketeers, working together all their lives. He added that he will remember his brother’s kindness, generosity and vision, praising how he was so remarkable and could see things before anyone else.

Gwen Stefani Using Fashion as Backup Career

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

On the newest issue of InStyle magazine, Gwen Stefani is featured on the cover. During the interview, she told the mag that she wanted to make sure she has something to do when she doesn’t release anymore music in the future, and this where her desire to do fashion came into play – as a backup career.

The singer said that she wanted to have a backup plan for when she stops performing in the future. Being “realistic”, she says that her life isn’t always going to be like it is now, so she wants to continue to have something creative to do.

The singer added that fashion is the perfect choice for a career for her, commenting that she made a lot of clothes when she was growing up, as well as use to make her own costumes. She would always daydream about what she would make next, she said.

Stafani also revealed that she’s been keeping her designer clothes collection in case she has a daughter one day. It’s not something that she’s focusing on right now, she explained, but it’s not really up to her, noting that children are miracles. Otherwise, she adds, the clothes will probably go to one of her son Kingston’s girlfriends.

The 40-year-old launched her L.A.M.B. fashion line in 2004. Recently, however, she has been working on a comeback album with No Doubt, her band. She said that it will be influenced by the worst of the ’80s. The band has been listening to one-hit-wonders and nifty songs to find the ones they love and figure out how they were made.
