Lindsay, Cheryl and Katie the benchmark for fake tans

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Katie Price, Cheryl Cole, and Lindsay Lohan are off the tanning chart, literally. The trio of stunners has been named as just some of the many celebrities who have used fake tanning services, with the results occasionally being a disaster.

The new Debenhams ‘Tan Tone Colour chart’, which looks remarkably like a painting colour guide, has been put together to help those addicted to getting some colour avoid ending up either florescent of overly coloured, which the likes of Cole, Price and Lohan can all admit to. Other notable celebrity tanners include Alex Reid, Dale Winton and wrestler Hulk Hogan.

The Beauty Halls of the leading high street retailer have recently been revamped to match the change of season, and welcome a new round of tanners while providing them with the best solutions to they’re pale pores. Now customers can identify where they place on the tanning chart, which ranges from ‘pale and interesting’ up to ‘radioactive orange’, with Alex Reid’s latest effort a good example of the latter, while Nicola Roberts has been suggested as typifying the former.

Director of Beauty at Debenhams, Sara Stern, claimed this summer was all about looking bronzed, but that research by her team had found that a high 70 per cent of DIY tanners get it wrong. Unsurprisingly, says Stern, the three major sins committed were using too much product, choosing the wrong tone for their skin and applying to frequently.

The lead up to the so far blessedly pleasant British summer saw Debenhams fake tan sales soar by around 64 per cent, as people rushed to give themselves a base tan to go on holiday with, in keeping with the historical irony of the trend for using tanning products when the sun comes out.

The most popular brands of fake tanning products are Clarins, Lancaster Sun, St Tropez, Fake Bake, Xen Tan and Famous Dave’s. Stern also said that they had started stocking tan remover from St Tropez, making the analogy with a paint shop even more poignant.

Madonna named as the 80s fashion icon

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Madonna Louise Ciccone, aka Madonna, the original Material Girl, has been voted as the leading fashion icon from the 1980s

The record-breaking pop superstar’s dress sense, which was copied by fashion followers in almost every country on the planet, was recognised in a new survey of British women. The study was appropriately undertaken by Galaxy Counters – the retro chocolate.

Madonna beat fellow icons Kylie Minogue and Debbie Harry into a tie for second place, with her constant ability to update and stay one step ahead of current trends making her an undisputed fashion leader. Joan Collins, Jerry Hall and Annie Lennox rounded out the top five

Whether it was leg-warmers, mesh tops, stonewash denim, Ra Ra skirts or even kabbala bracelets, wrist-ties and chunky jewellery, Madonna started it or brought it back. Galaxy Counters spokesperson Jacqui Thomas said that one of every three UK women claimed that stonewash denim - which even today appears to be going through somewhat of a renaissance – was one of the 80s greatest fashion trends.

The chocolate maker launched the survey as it prepares to join the ranks of comeback cult classics with the prelaunch of the brand new looking Galaxy Counters – themselves an 80s institution and one of many favourites from that decade to make a reappearance of late.

For the more contemporary fashion leaders, Cheryl Cole was voted today’s most stylish woman ahead of eccentric songstress Lady Gaga. Emma Watson, Sienna Miller, Lily Allen and Agyness Dean also made the list.

Cheryl Cole Voted Best Dressed Again

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole, who is also a judge on X Factor, has kept her crown as the best dressed female celeb in the world. The list was compiled by Glamour magazine with 14,000 votes from readers.

Cole, who’s going through a divorce from Chelsea footballer Ashley Cole after allegations of him cheating surfaced in early February, is seen wearing outfits that hug her figure. She doesn’t have a signature style, but her attire is very memorable.

In fact, she wore a military-style outfit with trousers split at the legs while performing her number one single “Fight For This Love” on X Factor for the first time. Also during the show, she battled for the best outfits against fellow judge Dannii Minogue, who is an Australian singer.

According to designer Henry Holland, Cheryl wore creations from Richard Nicoll, Giles Deacon and Marios Schwab, which helped her keep the top spot. He described her wearing these designers on the X Factor as flexing her fashion mojo.

While Cheryl kept her crown, her fellow judge Dannii was voted to 6th place, which is her best ranking so far on the list. However, the judge’s sister, singer Kylie Minogue, didn’t even place in the top 50. The Top 10 Best Dressed were:

  1. Cheryl Cole
  2. Rihanna
  3. Blake Lively
  4. Leighton Meester
  5. Alexa Chung
  6. Dannii Minogue
  7. Kate Moss
  8. Victoria Beckham
  9. Beyoncé
  10. Emma Watson

It’s worth noting that, while Angelina Jolie placed 23rd and Lady Gaga placed 30th on the best dressed list, they were also put on the worst dressed list. Gaga was number two and Jolie was number five on the couple’s list with Brad Pitt. Topping the worst dressed list was Katie Price, while she and Alex Reid also topped the worst dressed couples list.
