Fashion faux pas as three leading magazine covers feature the same dress

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Oh dear. In a real fashion catastrophe, three of the most popular style magazines on the planet have somehow contrived to feature the same dress on their latest covers.

Prada will no doubt be delighted, with their dress appearing on the front page of Vogue, Elle and W all at the same time, but industry analysts are wondering how such a faux pas could have happened in a business which employs teams of people to make sure that this precise incident is avoided. In what is the industry equivalent of three supermodels turning up to a party in the same outfit, the coincidence is somewhat of an embarrassment to all concerned. Fashion houses such as Prada go to great lengths to ensure that rival photo shoots are not given the same outfit, something which has left the respective magazine editors scrambling to deflect criticism.

While Elle magazine said the situation was not surprising given that the dress was so fabulous, Vogue attempted to point out that the dresses were not the same, saying that they had not even noticed the other covers.

Danish model Freja Beha Erichsen appears on the cover of British Vogue in tangerine version of Prada’s diffusion line Miu Miu, while Lily Allen is featured in a lilac lace version for UK Elle, and Eva Mendes adorns the cover of US glossy W in a yellow number. As if that wasn’t enough, model Mona Johannesson appears in the lilac dress on the cover of Swedish Elle.

Madonna named as the 80s fashion icon

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Madonna Louise Ciccone, aka Madonna, the original Material Girl, has been voted as the leading fashion icon from the 1980s

The record-breaking pop superstar’s dress sense, which was copied by fashion followers in almost every country on the planet, was recognised in a new survey of British women. The study was appropriately undertaken by Galaxy Counters – the retro chocolate.

Madonna beat fellow icons Kylie Minogue and Debbie Harry into a tie for second place, with her constant ability to update and stay one step ahead of current trends making her an undisputed fashion leader. Joan Collins, Jerry Hall and Annie Lennox rounded out the top five

Whether it was leg-warmers, mesh tops, stonewash denim, Ra Ra skirts or even kabbala bracelets, wrist-ties and chunky jewellery, Madonna started it or brought it back. Galaxy Counters spokesperson Jacqui Thomas said that one of every three UK women claimed that stonewash denim - which even today appears to be going through somewhat of a renaissance – was one of the 80s greatest fashion trends.

The chocolate maker launched the survey as it prepares to join the ranks of comeback cult classics with the prelaunch of the brand new looking Galaxy Counters – themselves an 80s institution and one of many favourites from that decade to make a reappearance of late.

For the more contemporary fashion leaders, Cheryl Cole was voted today’s most stylish woman ahead of eccentric songstress Lady Gaga. Emma Watson, Sienna Miller, Lily Allen and Agyness Dean also made the list.

Lily Allen Quitting Music for Fashion

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Lily Allen announced at the beginning of December that her concerts in March will be the last ones she does for a while, as she will be taking a break from music. While she’s on her break, she wants to start a career in fashion.

Allen says that she will take this break from music for about five years. She also revealed that she has started a fashion project with designer Wayne Hemingway, who is launching a music and fashion festival called Vintage at Goodwood, which Lily will be a part of.

The 24-year-old singer says that she will also launch her own shop with her sister Sarah Owen, which will be called Lucy in Disguise and will feature vintage clothes that people can rent. The shop will be filled with amazing stuff that’s really expensive if someone was to buy it, but girls will be able to rent the clothes for a night out. Renting vintage clothes sounds like a great idea!

Talking about her plans for the future, Lily said that she’s helping Wayne with Village at Goodwood first, and then she will be busy opening a shop with her sister and a few other people. She said that she’s in the office sourcing clothes every day, and she’s getting really excited about the new venture.

Despite the break to do something new, Lily made sure to let everyone know she’s not giving up music altogether. She says that she’s setting up a record label, as well as a music charity and website.
