Naomi Campbell refuses to testify at war crimes tribunal

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Supermodel Naomi Campbell, so often embroiled in controversy, has found herself in the midst of yet another scandal.

The UK model has refused to give evidence in a tribunal investigating war crimes of Charles Taylor, the former Liberian dictator. Campbell refused to be drawn into discussions over whether she was the recipient of an uncut, or ‘blood diamond’, back in 1997 when she and was visiting South Africa.

Both the British supermodel and the Liberian genocidal warlord were guests of the South African President Nelson Mandela, who at the time also hosted Mia Farrow, who was campaigning to bring world attention to the atrocities that were occurring on the border between Liberian and Sierra Leone. It was widely believed that the terror campaign carried out by Taylor’s forces was funded by the sales of diamonds.

Farrow told US reporters that she learned of the gift over breakfast one morning, after Campbell had told of the previous evening where men knocked on her door and claimed that they were representing President Charles Taylor. They then gave Campbell a huge diamond.

Taylor is currently on trail at The Hague, where some 50 former victims are planning on giving evidence that he was in South Africa with the purpose of buying weapons using diamonds. They claim the Farrow story about Campbell adds further proof to the rumours.

Campbell, who was recently approached on the subject during a benefit show to raise money for Haiti, refused to comment other than saying she did not receive any diamonds, just before she slammed the camera against the floor.

Naomi Campbell Organizes Fashion for Relief

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has called on the world of fashion to raise money for the people of Haiti through Fashion for Relief. The supermodel is planning a number of fashion shows to benefit the cause, and one will be included in New York Fashion Week on February 12.

Campbell has been getting together looks from fashion designers that will be worn by a number of celebrities on the runway and then put up for auction. When asked which designers she has contacted to help, she said all of them. All of the money from the auction will go to the earthquake victims.

The runway tigress has been organizing shows like this since 2005, which has helped victims of tragedies like the Mumbai terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina. This will be the first time in a few years that she has done the show in New York though.

Campbell said that this show will be a rare chance for the public to see the Bryant Park tents personally, as they will be moving to Lincoln Center for Fashion Week in September. She says that this isn’t the typical runway show, because having the public in the audience is more fun since they are the ones who don’t usually get to see the shows.

The supermodel had already announced an event like this for London, and when she said she wanted to have one in New York too, the calendar was already full. However, designer Charlotte Ronson was okay with moving her event so the Fashion for Relief could be included. Bryant Park producers agreed to help with getting models, and Campbell is talking to several celebrities to be in the show too.

Campbell said that fashion is the world she’s in – is what she knows and has loved for 25 years. This is their way of coming together to give a contribution, she added.

Supermodels Get Naked for LOVE Magazine Cover

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Eight supermodels have stripped naked for the cover of LOVE, a bi-annual fashion and lifestyle magazine. The models include Kate Moss, Lara Stone, Naomi Campbell, Daria Werbowy, Natalia Vodianova, Kristen McMenamy, Amber Valletta and Jeneil Williams.

All of the models posed identically for the latest issue of the mag, which will be sold with 8 different covers starting Monday next week. All of the supermodels’ measurements are also printed, and there are 40 pages in the mag featuring them.

Katie Grand, the editor for LOVE magazine said that, for this issue, they took 8 women that are generally known as the world’s most beautiful. The mag got them to show off their bodies, which many believe are the most perfect in the world and shot them in exactly the same pose for each of the covers, she continued.

Grand also says that his was done to show how different each woman is physically from the other, which is why they also printed all of their measurements. The point is that there is no such thing as fixed perfection, transcendent or timeless, as it varies like the girls’ measurements clearly show, she added.

Mert Alas, one photographer for the cover photo shoot, said that it was interesting to study the supermodels naked while they posed in the same position. They are all so different, yet so powerful looking, he added. Marcus Piggott, the other photographer, said that each of the models were special in their own way, and he thanks them for that.

LOVE magazine is published by Condé Nast and was launched in February of 2009. For their first issue, they put Beth Ditto on the cover naked.
